Suffolk’s Priority Spider and other Arachnid Species
Key
Listed as a conservation priority in Suffolk’s Biodiversity Action Plan.
Closely associated with Suffolk’s landscape and natural identity.
Identified as a key priority for recovery under Suffolk’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
Has a Species of the Month article attached.
The SBIS database holds spider records for the county, with lists for several major reserves that draw heavily on Eric Duffey’s work from the 1960s. Paul Lee has computerised most spider records on his own copy of Recorder, and his annual recorder’s reports for spiders and other arthropods have contributed significantly to our understanding of the county’s arachnofauna. Suffolk’s most notable spider is undoubtedly the Fen Raft Spider (Dolomedes plantarius), one of the rarest species in the UK, first discovered at Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s Redgrave and Lopham Fen reserve in 1956.
Further information on recording and identification can be found on the British Arachnological Society (BAS) website and the Spider Recording Scheme (SRS) pages. Our Species Identification Guides page contains a useful list of resources.
