Suffolk Lungwort Pulmonaria obscura
Suffolk Lungwort (Pulmonaria obscura) is one of Britain’s rarest native plants and takes its common name directly from the county, reflecting the outstanding importance of Suffolk to its survival. This unspotted lungwort – distinguished from the familiar garden species by its plain green leaves – is confined in Britain to ancient woodland on boulder clay in west Suffolk, with a tiny number of known sites. It flowers in early spring, producing clusters of pink-turning-violet blooms. All known Suffolk sites are of the highest conservation importance, and the species is the subject of targeted monitoring and habitat management to safeguard its long-term future.
