Blue-fin tuna leaping out of the sea

Atlantic Blue-fin Tuna Thunnus thynnus

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is one of the ocean’s most powerful and fastest fish, capable of crossing entire ocean basins. After a near-disappearance from British waters following severe overfishing, the species has staged a remarkable return to the North Sea and English Channel in recent years, with sightings – and a reinstated catch-and-release tagging programme – generating considerable excitement along the east coast of England. Records from or near Suffolk waters have been reported as part of this ongoing recovery. The return of bluefin tuna to the southern North Sea is one of the most significant recent developments in British marine conservation. Image: © Lucas Benaiche, iNaturalist.
