Pitted Frillwort

Pitted Frillwort Fossombronia foveolata

The Pitted Frillwort (Fossombronia foveolata) is a small, thallose liverwort of damp, disturbed, and seasonally wet ground – found on the margins of pools, ditches, and seasonally flooded tracks and arable fields on suitable soils. Nationally scarce and easily overlooked, its low-growing form blends into surrounding soil and vegetation. In Suffolk it is associated with damp, base-influenced habitats including fen margins and disturbed wet ground in river valley systems. Like many small bryophytes of ephemeral habitats, its distribution is probably incompletely recorded, and targeted survey in suitable habitats would help to build a fuller county picture.
