The Value of SBIS Data

Suffolk Biodiversity Information Service is Suffolk’s independent repository for biodiversity data. By collating, validating, and curating millions of species and site records contributed by expert and volunteer naturalists across the county, SBIS provides the evidence base that public bodies, planners, developers, and land managers need to make sound decisions for Suffolk’s future.

Supporting SBIS means investing not just in data management, but in the long-term health and resilience of Suffolk’s natural environment.

Economic value

Evidence-based policy and planning: SBIS data underpins local plans, biodiversity strategies, and the Local Nature Recovery Strategy. Access to pre-validated, comprehensive data reduces the time and resources needed for internal assessments, provides a robust defence against legal challenge, and helps ensure that land use and development decisions are based on accurate, up-to-date information.

Targeted investment: By identifying areas of high ecological value, biodiversity hotspots, and habitats in need of targeted intervention, SBIS data helps organisations direct resources where they will have the greatest impact – whether allocating conservation funding, prioritising grant applications, or planning green infrastructure.

Proactive risk reduction: Early identification of environmental risks and sensitivities reduces the likelihood of costly remediation, minimises regulatory delay, and supports more streamlined environmental assessment and approval processes.

Accountability and reporting: SBIS provides an auditable, consistent evidence base for reporting on environmental performance and demonstrating the impact of biodiversity investment against key targets and indicators.

Cross-sector collaboration: SBIS connects local authorities, statutory bodies, developers, conservation organisations, and academic institutions around a shared understanding of Suffolk’s biodiversity. This shared evidence base enables more integrated and cost-effective environmental management across the county.

Ecological value

Strategic conservation planning: SBIS data is central to identifying conservation priorities for Suffolk – pinpointing critical species, habitats, and ecological networks, and providing the foundational evidence for the Local Nature Recovery Strategy.

Protected site management: SBIS supports the designation, management, and monitoring of Suffolk’s protected sites, including County Wildlife Sites and Roadside Nature Reserves, helping to safeguard their long-term ecological integrity.

Monitoring change: By tracking biodiversity trends over time, SBIS provides insight into the impacts of climate change, land-use change, and other environmental pressures specific to Suffolk. This supports adaptive management and climate resilience planning.

Early warning: Flagging declines in species populations or habitat degradation allows for timely intervention before irreversible damage occurs – protecting the county’s natural heritage for future generations.

Ecological connectivity: SBIS data helps identify and promote ecological networks across Suffolk, supporting habitat connectivity, species movement, and landscape-scale resilience.
